![]() But the entire point of the first two episodes was to establish Lala as a “no limits” threat, and showcase his history/rivalry with Pierce. Perhaps it’s too early to tell and Tobias will give us more than we’ve seen so far, becoming an effective villain himself. ![]() ![]() Now he’s just….dead? In two episodes? If so, that feels like a miscalculation. But that truce was broken when Lala kidnapped Pierce’s daughters and continued to threaten their lives this week. We know Black Lightning and Tobias squared off in the past, but in two episodes, the show had already established a more important connection between Jefferson Pierce (Black Lightning) and Lala, as Lala used to be one of his students, and we know that Pierce and Lala made a deal that Pierce’s school was off limits. Lala (apparently) dies at the end of the night, choked to death by the “real” big bad, Tobias, a much more cartoony villain, and one that so far, had not been nearly as interesting as Lala. To me, it seems like Black Lightning has already done the same thing, only in episode two. It completely ravaged the end of the first season. The problem? The show spent all this time cultivating the rivalry between Cottonmouth and Cage, only to kill him off and replace him with the “real” big bad, Diamondback, a much, much worse character who showed up in a goofy suit with alien bullets that could pierce Cage’s skin and a goofy backstory about how the two were connected in childhood. That was in part thanks to not just Cage, but the show’s villain, now-Oscar winner Mahershala Ali’s non-superpowered gangster, Cottonmouth. The first two thirds of Luke Cage was some of Marvel’s best TV content to date. ![]() Namely, because it sure feels like Black Lightning pulled a Luke Cage last night. You don’t see that on The Flash.īut I’m concerned. Just…shot her point blank in a parking lot like it was nothing. It’s not Punisher-level graphic violence or anything, but in episode two alone we saw gangster Lala execute his own cousin (who seemed like he was going to be a major character) and then later, the mother of one of his prostitutes who was filming his criminal activity as a way to try and sic the cops on him. Black Lightning has surprised me with its brutality, especially this week. ![]()
